Cousins Wishes He Was Still At Kentucky

Mar 31, 2011 10:26 AM

When former Kentucky center DeMarcus Cousin’s mind wanders to last year's dismal 73-66 loss to West Virginia in the NCAA Tournament's East Regional final, Cousins tosses and turns as images of missed shots and missed opportunities replay in his mind.

"When I think about it, I can't sleep at night because we should have won that game," said Cousins, now a rookie center for the NBA's Sacramento Kings.

Even at 18, Cousins understood he was part of something special.

"Yes, I wish I was still there," Cousins said. "College life was fun."

Pitino Was Highest Paid Coach In Tournament

Mar 31, 2011 10:23 AM

Louisville's Rick Pitino is making $7.5 million this season, according to a USA TODAY analysis of contracts and other compensation documents. dwarfing the $85,000 of Northern Colorado's B.J. Hill.

Pitino's compensation — nearly 90 times more than Hill's — is boosted by a $3.6 million bonus for completing three years of his contract.

Among the 33 coaches whose pay USA TODAY has tracked the last two seasons, the average pay was up 11% to $1.7 million, not including bonuses averaging up to $390,000.

Kentucky's John Calipari will make $3.9 million this year, with another $650,000 in tournament bonus money available. Virginia Commonwealth's Shaka Smart will make $424,000, with about $257,000 in possible tournament bonuses.

Matta Played Percentages In Choosing Not To Call Timeout Against Kentucky

Mar 30, 2011 6:10 PM

With Ohio State trailing by two with less than 6 seconds remaining against Kentucky, coach Thad Matta let the action unfold, opting to not call a timeout. Point guard Aaron Craft passed to William Buford, whose three-point attempt glanced off the rim.

Matta says he wouldn’t have changed his tactics in those final seconds because he believes the percentages are better to score when not calling the timeout:

“When the shot went in I immediately went to the clock and as I look back, Aaron had a full head of steam. … I felt like we had Kentucky on their heels a little bit. Aaron had a great read and William (Buford) had a good look. I wouldn’t change that at all. … The percentages say taking a timeout, you score more in not taking one than you do with.”

Rivers, Wiltjer Turning Heads During McDonald's All-American Practices

Mar 30, 2011 6:08 PM

The projected future stars of college basketball and the NBA will take to the biggest stage of high school hoops tonight in the 31st McDonald’s All-American game.

Scout.com’s Brian Snow was at every practice session and praised the play of future Duke guard Austin Rivers and Kentucky forward Kyle Wiltjer.

“I wouldn’t say there was one moment that wowed everyone but you certainly took notice of Austin Rivers and Kyle Wiltjer,” Snow said. “It seemed like those cats didn’t miss a shot.”

Rose: Calipari Creates Us Against World Mentality

Mar 30, 2011 6:06 PM

As a freshman point guard at Memphis in 2007, coach John Calipari would shout out Derrick Rose's errors.

"If it was a play in practice and I wasn't aggressive, he'd stop practice, curse me out, then start practice up again," Rose said. "You get tired of it."

As exhausting as Calipari's derision was, Rose said being held to such high standards made him a better player, one who many believe will win the NBA's most valuable player award.

"He always wanted me to be great," Rose said. "When I was going to college, I wasn't aggressive. In (Simeon) high school, I probably averaged 14-16 points. He just makes you aggressive the whole time. He makes you play hard the whole time.

"With his offense, you need a great point guard and the last couple of years that's what he has been doing," Rose said. "Everyone thought because they were young (this season) they weren't going to make it. They stuck together. He always puts it in your head, 'It's us against the world.'"

Report: NBA Will Investigate Jay-Z's Postgame Celebration With Kentucky

Mar 30, 2011 10:32 AM

The NBA will investigate Jay-Z’s visit with the Kentucky basketball team after Sunday’s 76-69 win against North Carolina in the NCAA Tournament East Regional Final, reports CBSSports.com’s Ken Berger.

Jay-Z, rapper and part-owner of the New Jersey Nets, might have violated NBA rules because Kentucky has multiple potential first-round draft picks on its roster.

Berger equates the incident to Celtics GM Danny Ainge sitting with Kevin Durant's mother during the 2007 Big 12 tournament. Ainge and the Celtics were fined $30,000 for the infraction.

Kanter Played Pivotal Role In Harrellson's Development

Mar 30, 2011 10:20 AM

Kentucky recruit Enes Kanter, who was ruled ineligible before the start of the season for accepting impermissible benefits while playing for the Turkish club team Fenerbahce two years ago, has played a key part in the development of senior Josh Harrellson, who came into this season averaging 2.7 points and two rebounds per game in his UK career but is averaging 14.8 points and nine rebounds per game in this NCAA Tournament.

“Even if I’m not even going against (Kanter), just watching him do something (in practice), I’m trying to match what he does,” Harrellson said.

“Just doing that makes me more confident. Being able to stop him in practice and playing against him every day – playing against the best of the best – just makes me go into every game knowing I’m not going to play somebody as good as Enes.”

Coach John Calipari designated Kanter as an undergraduate student-assistant coach.

Kentucky's Style Will Suit 'Do It All' Michael Gilchrist

Mar 29, 2011 12:06 PM

While Kentucky enjoys the success of their first Final Four bid in over a decade, the addition next season of incoming freshman Michael Gilchrist will ensure continued success regardless of how many players leave early.

"He just does it all," St. Patrick coach Kevin Boyle said. "He's one of the best guys I've seen in a long, long time."

The 6-7 Gilchrist averaged 19.4 points, 14.9 rebounds and 6.3 assists as a senior.

Gilchrist is also one of the few prep stars to play elite level defense.

"I always play hard," Gilchrist said. "I just don't like to lose."

Gilchrist picked Kentucky over Oregon, Vanderbilt, Texas and Villanova.

"He's going to a style that's good for him," Boyle said. "[Kentucky is] gonna try to get up and down."

6-10 Kentucky Recruit Wins Powerade Three-Point Contest

Mar 29, 2011 10:29 AM

Kyle Wiltjer won the three-point shootout at the Powerade Jam Fest, talling 17 points in the second round -- including a double-point ball at the buzzer -- to claim the shootout in the McDonald’s All-American Game festivities.

“People say that big men can’t shoot and I just like to prove them wrong,” said Wiltjer, who is from Portland, Ore.

Wiltjer said his versatility makes him a tougher player for opponents to prepare for and he likes to show off his skills in an event like the shootout.

“My shooting against players males me tougher to defend,” he said. “Teams have to respect my shot.”

Wiltjer is rated the No. 25 overall prospect in the class of 2011 by recruiting service Rivals.com.
